ethics & guidelines

How we get access, what we accept, and what we do when we get something wrong.

last updated 1 sep 2026

independence

Nobody pays for coverage and nobody sees a text before it is published. No distributor, festival or studio has any say over what we write, when we write it, or what score sits at the top.

We pay for our own tickets where we can. Where we cannot — festival accreditation, press screenings, screener links — we say so in the piece.

gifts, travel and accreditation

Press accreditation and screeners are accepted; paid trips, hotels and hospitality are not. If a festival covers travel, that piece carries a disclosure line at the foot of it.

We do not accept gifts, merchandise or anything that could be mistaken for one. Books and physical media sent unrequested stay unreviewed or get declared.

conflicts of interest

If either of us knows someone involved in a film, has taught, programmed or been paid alongside them, we either hand the piece to the other writer or state the relationship in the text.

Academic work, teaching and festival jury service are declared on our author pages.

criticism, not press release

We quote films accurately, describe plot only as far as an argument needs it, and mark spoilers when a piece turns on one. We do not run embargoed praise, publicity copy or supplied quotes as our own writing.

Our line is queer, non-normative, progressive, anticapitalist and pro-difference. That is a stance, not a secret, and it is legible in every review.

corrections

Factual errors are fixed as soon as we know about them, with a dated note at the foot of the piece. Judgements are not corrected — we may write a second piece disagreeing with the first, and we will link the two.
